Two dead, six unconscious in Abia brothel

There was chaos on Uyo Street, Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday, after two guests were discovered dead and six others unconscious.

Although the cause of the incident had yet to be ascertained as of press time, it was learnt that those unconscious, which included the manager of the brothel, had been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

A source told our correspondent that the brothel, popularly called 50-50 Bar, usually hosted men who came to meet prostitutes at night.

The source, however, added that some occupants of the brothel raised the alarm as early as 8am that the manager was unconscious. The alarm drew residents to the scene.

He said, “It was the shout of the prostitutes that got our attention. By the time we got there, the manager was already unconscious, so we informed the police.”

The source explained that the owner of the brothel, simply identified as Madam 50-50, had yet to be seen since the incident happened.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ogbonaya Nta, confirmed the incident.

He said, “We got information that people died at the brothel. When we got there, we saw two lifeless bodies and six others, who were unconscious. The remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, while those unconscious are currently receiving treatment.”

He called on residents of the area to remain calm, saying the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department was investigating the cause of the incident.

Lagos resident killed after winning lottery

A 35-year-old man, Ejike Onyejekwe, has been killed in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, who lived on 21 Road, K Close, FESTAC, was stabbed to death after winning a lot of money from a lottery.

Our correspondent gathered that Onyejekwe, to celebrate the winning, bought drinks for his friends and threw a party last Thursday and Friday.

It was learnt that on Friday evening, he was heard arguing with an unidentified person on the phone.

He allegedly told his friend he was going to see the man, but never returned.

His corpse was allegedly discovered the next day on one of the estates.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the chairman of the estate called the attention of residents to the corpse on Saturday.

He said, “I was sipping tea around 7am when I heard the chairman blowing a whistle. I thought it was strange, but my wife called my attention to the surging crowd on the estate.

“I went downstairs and saw the corpse on the road. Like everybody, I was alarmed. We could not tell how the corpse got there or who he was. He had multiple stab injuries in the head. We all resolved that the case should be reported at the FESTAC Police Station.”

It was learnt that some of the victim’s friends later identified him.

The corpse was said to have been deposited in a morgue, while the police arrested and detained the chairman of the estate and his secretary; they were later released.

A source told PUNCH Metro that the victim won a lottery few days to his death.

He said, “The man won a lot of money in a lottery and from last Thursday to Friday, he was asking his friends to drink at his expense.

“He was called on the phone that Friday evening and he went to meet a man. I suspect that a gang stabbed him and used an object to hit him in the head. There were bruises on his knees and it appeared they dragged him on the floor as well.

“When the police were removing his corpse, blood was dripping from his mouth and nostrils. He was murdered in cold blood.”

A friend of the victim, who did not identify himself, said his relative had visited the community.

“I can’t say why he was killed. Nobody knows. He just returned from a visit to the village,” he added.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

She added that the police had already arrested two suspects in connection with the death.

She said, “The chairman of one of the estates reported that at about 7am, he woke up and saw the victim lying lifeless with injuries on his head and body. The corpse was deposited at the Isolo General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy. Two suspects, Suleiman Ahmed and Ibrahim Yusuf, were arrested and the case transferred to the SCIID for further investigation.”

CHIBOK GIRLS: PRESIDENT BUHARI INVITES U.N AS NEGOTIATOR

As a show of commitment to swapping the abducted schoolgirls from Chibok with Boko Haram fighters in custody, President Muhammadu Buhari has told the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, that Nigeria would welcome intermediaries from the global body.

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with the UN scribe at the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly in New York, President Buhari said the Nigerian government was willing to bend over backwards, to get the Chibok girls released from captivity.

"The challenge is in getting credible and bona fide leadership of Boko Haram to discuss with," the President said, adding that, "The split in the insurgent group is not helping matters. Government had reached out, ready to negotiate, but it became difficult to identify credible leaders. We will welcome intermediaries such as UN outfits, to step in.”

The President reiterated that the teachings of Boko Haram were far from being Islamic, as neither Islam, nor any other religion, advocates hurting the weak and innocent.
"The fact that they kill men, women, children, and other people wantonly, and shout Allahu Akbar (God is great) shows that they do not know that Allah at all. If they did, they would not shed innocent blood," President Buhari said.

He thanked Ban Ki-moon for the moral and material support given to Nigeria, which has enabled the country surmount many of the challenges facing her.

In his response, the UN Secretary General congratulated President Buhari on the anti-corruption war, declaring: “You are highly respected by world leaders, including myself. Your persona has given your country a positive image.”

He said the UN recognized the achievements of the Buhari administration against Boko Haram, urging that human rights be upheld always, to prevent a repeat of the scenario being witnessed in Syria.

Ban Ki-moon also thanked the Nigerian leader for his commitment to issues on climate change, adding that the government should "own the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," for the good of its citizens.

N-POWER, FG'S 500,000 JOBS' SCHEME FOR UNEMPLOYED GRADUATES, OTHERS ENTER ASSESSMENT PHASE

About a million Nigerian undergraduates who have applied online for the N-Power programme of the Buhari presidency would now be assessed in order to pick the final 500,000 for the two-year volunteer positions.

N-Power also has programmes for the non-graduates

Yesterday, the Federal Government released a schedule for the next phase of the N-Power Programme, which is the job creation and empowerment initiative of its Social Investment Programme.

Under the next phase of the programme, candidates will be assessed in phases based on their specific chosen programmes before the final selection.

Under this phase, applicants are to log in and fill in their phone numbers and surnames as contained in their original application, using their personal profile (which has been opened for every applicant).

In addition, all candidates will be notified by SMS of their assessment the day before.

All assessments will include some personal questions and other questions testing basic knowledge of English, General Knowledge and Quantitative Reasoning.

Applicants should also note that they will be tested on other programme-specific questions depending on the programme they applied for.

Applicants are to note also that they can take their tests on a smart-phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer provided that the devices have internet connection.

Successful applicants will be selected to participate in the N-Power programme.

Applicants can only gain access to their profile for assessment as represented in the schedule which breaks down applicants in batches by the first letter in their surnames.

Based on the schedule, applicants for the N-Power Teach programme will be first in line, starting on Tuesday September 20, 2016 and applicants whose surnames fall between the alphabets V-Z (e.g. Venda, Wushishi, Xiaver, Yusuf, Zikora) should log in and take their assessments on the stipulated date.
